How It Works
-
Parents or guardians make the decision to homeschool their child as an alternative to mainstream schooling, based on the child’s academic, emotional, social, or family needs.
Homeschooling in South Africa is legal, but it comes with specific parental responsibilities.
-
In South Africa, the parent/guardian is the primary educator.
This means:
You are legally responsible for your child’s education
You must ensure your child is registered correctly
You must choose an approved curriculum pathway
Homeschool support centres do not replace the parent’s legal role.
-
Before attending a homeschool support centre, parents/guardians must apply for official homeschooling registration with the Department of Basic Education (DBE).
This includes:
Submitting the DBE homeschool application
Providing required documentation
Awaiting acknowledgement/approval
This registration is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility.
-
Parents/guardians must enrol their child with a recognised homeschool curriculum provider.
This provider supplies:Lesson content
Assessments
Exams
Progression to the next grade
Common South African homeschool providers include:
Impaq
Cambrilearn
Parents/guardians are free to choose the platform that best suits their child.
-
Once a provider is selected, parents/guardians must:
Register the learner on the platform
Pay the provider’s fees
Receive login details, subject outlines, and assessment schedules
This step must be completed before the learner can fully benefit from a homeschool centre environment.
-
A homeschool support centre (like Eunoia) does not replace:
The DBE
The curriculum provider
The parent’s legal responsibility
Instead, the centre offers:
Daily structure and routine
Academic guidance and supervision
Small-group learning support
A calm, focused learning environment
Think of it as structured support, not a private school.
-
Parents/guardians should consider:
Can my child learn in a small group?
Do they benefit from routine and structure?
Are they able to work through online/printed curriculum with guidance?
This ensures the centre is the right fit for the learner.
-
At this stage, parents/guardians can:
Contact Eunoia to enquire about availability
Book a consultation or centre viewing
Confirm programme options (half-day or full-day)
Complete centre registration and confirm a start date
Eunoia then partners with families to provide daily structure, academic support, and a calm, guided learning environment, while parents/guardians remain responsible for the legal homeschooling registration and curriculum provider.
